Our Journey Raising Two Children with Special Needs

This blog chronicles our life raising two children, Nicholas 15, diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome and Weston 18, diagnosed with Autism/Asperger's/ADHD. It's the ups, the downs, the joys, the sorrows and most importantly, the beauty of living a life less perfect, a life more meaningful.

Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Discovered in our Town

We just received a phone call from our Superintendent of Schools. She explains that town health officials have discovered a large sampling of mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile Virus. State officials have confirmed this.

All outdoor school activities, recess, and sports events have been cancelled until further notice.

We have received a lot of rain here in the last few week, making plenty of prime breeding grounds available to these insects.  We are waiting to hear whether the town is considering a spraying program.

I am very concerned about this news since Nicholas has a weakened immune system and is very susceptible to infection. Weston on the other hand, is like a mosquito magnet. His high energy blood is like sugar to these disease-carrying insects. He is always the first to get bitten.

For those of you unfamiliar with this virus, I located some information here.

Oh Brother!

OMGosh! I am so scared of the West Nile Virus! I don't like putting bug spray on my kids, but I think I would if my town was infested like your's is. Good luck and I hope you can keep the mosquitoes off your kiddos!
