These last few weeks of school have been very difficult for both of my children.
For me, the dwindling number of school days means an increase in my vigilance to remind those who work with my children to do their best to implement more supports for them during these unstructured days. It is something that many teachers, and even some special needs trained professionals forget.
Weston did his best to end the year on a good note. He struggled to remain calm during some of the high energy/scream-filled events that typically take place on the playgrounds. Idle time spent in the classroom spells boredom and leads to trouble for my high energy son.
Nicholas's challenge was to stay clear of the many food-filled events that accompany the end of the year celebrations. Nicholas had to be removed from the classroom before the plates of cakes, cookies and chocolate brownies were piled high onto the classroom tables.
Thankfully, today, it is all over.
Now, it is my job to implement some summer month structure for the boys.
Nicholas will be participating in the school "summer program". Hopefully to maintain the last few months of learning that he recovered after his earlier regression.
Weston was offered a summer school program too. This year, however, he is not interested.
"Mom," he said "I just need a break from the kids who are just like me!"
I told him I would agree, provided however, that I don't hear the words...
"Mom, I'm bored!"
