Our Journey Raising Two Children with Special Needs

This blog chronicles our life raising two children, Nicholas 14, diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome and Weston 17, diagnosed with Autism/Asperger's/ADHD. It's the ups, the downs, the joys, the sorrows and most importantly, the beauty of living a life less perfect, a life more meaningful.

A Principal and a Soldier

Sometimes you never know just where the day will take you....and why.

A few months ago, I was at our local grocery store when I bumped into the principal at Weston's old preschool. I asked her how she was doing. She responded that she was retired now and doing well. She remembered Weston and asked me about him. I filled her in on his latest school struggles.

She seemed sad and told me that she too had a son. He is currently serving in Afghanistan. Large tears began to fill her eyes. She bravely tried to hold them back as she continued to speak with me.

I gained some valuable perspective as I spoke with her and realized that my concerns about Weston's school troubles were really nothing in comparison to this mother's pain. I have an awful lot to be thankful for...

She explained that her son was serving as a dog handler in a K-9 unit.

As I was speaking with her, a thought flashed in my head and I asked her if it would be OK for Weston to correspond with her son. Perhaps both her son and mine would benefit from such an exchange? I couldn't help but think that our strange encounter at the grocery store was no coincidence.

She said "yes"!

Since then, Weston has been corresponding with this soldier and his faithful companion (Z)!

If you are a reader of this blog, then you already know Weston's fascination with all things military.
So far, it has been a valuable experience for Weston. He has learned alot about Afghanistan and its culture, climate and people. He has developed a new friendship while supporting a young man and his dog who are both risking their lives to serve our country and help others.
We are putting a care package together to send to Weston's new friends.
If you have any idea's on suitable items....please leave a google plus comment (I receive them but just can't post them) or email me at jalape04ATcomcastDOTnet.
